Taking Home the Bronze: 2016 Stock Illuminators & Bronzers

Post originally published by Jennifer X on Born Jennius, 20 June 2016.

Highlighters/ illuminators and bronzers – the most recent endeavors in my makeup skills bag. I definitely have enough to play with as I try to get better in the application but I might not have much to say about them yet just because I’m lacking in experience.

However, if one is curious as to which ones I have, who am I to disappoint?

Benefit Watt’s Up! – Soft Focus
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed – Moonstone
Teri Miyahira Beauty Illuminator – Chance (LE 2016)

The Benefit Watt’s Up! was a Sephora free birthday gift a few years ago, so I should probably throw it out but as far as I can tell, it hasn’t changed in smell or formula. It’s a pretty champagne color. It’s a cream product and I’m not at all skilled with the cream products. The other two highlighters were recent purchases. The Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone is a shimmering pale gold.

The Teri Miyahira Beauty Illuminator in Chance is a pale pink shimmer. I wasn’t sure that I was going to like Chance, but I do!

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte – Original
Estee Lauder Soft Matte Bronzer – Bronze Goddess
Teri Miyahira Beauty Powder Bronzer – Faith (LE 2016)

I mostly use bronzers as contour, but I’m starting to try using them for bronzing, which my skin doesn’t do on its own. This is the original Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer; they came out with a lighter milk chocolate and a deeper dark chocolate shade. I got the Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess sample from a church donation; someone had donated a bunch of cosmetic samples but the charity we were working with couldn’t take them, so we were able to pick out what we wanted. It has a deep pink shimmer in it but it doesn’t show up too much on the skin so it gives a nice subtle and natural suntanned glow. The Teri Miyahira Beauty Bronzer in Faith also has shimmer that is a little more noticeable but still natural-looking, this time with a golden glow.

In Face Palettes
Too Faced A Few of My Favorite Things (Holiday 2013)
Bronzer – Chocolate Soleil
Bronzer – Sun Bunny Duo

Tarte Aqualillies (Summer 2013)
Highlighter – Champagne
Bronzer – Park Avenue Princess

I haven’t used a thing in the Too Faced A Few of My Favorite Things Palette. I plan to use it eventually, but I got it more so for the whole theme and how they put it together, and it’s so pretty. I have used the Tarte Aqualillies Palette. I go back and forth on passing it on, but for now I still have it. I don’t know what to say about the Champagne Highlight or the Park Avenue Princess Bronzer though because I’m still so unused to highlight and bronzer.

Originally, I was going to do bronzers and highlighters with the blushes in one post, but I had a lot more blush to go through, with swatches and comparisons, so I parted them into their own post. Since then, I’ve used up the Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess, and got another illuminator and another bronzer. I’ve also started to use the ones in the Tarte Aqualillies Palette, which I can talk about more in the next Beauty Report, but so far, they’re good.

I heard a lot about The Body Shop Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder, swatched it in store but it was out of stock, and so I’ve had it on my wishlist for over a year. It has been out of stock on a couple of sites for over a year. It finally came in stock, I used up the Bronze Goddess, and so I picked up the Honey Bronze even though I have other bronzers to use. I got it in 03 Medium Matte. It might be awhile until I use it enough to have more to say on it, but I do still like the color and feel of it after all this time and am looking forward to using it.

The Teri Miyahira Beauty Dew Drops in Calm (not pictured, will insert soon) arrived recently in the May TMB box. It’s going to take me some time to get used it as this is my first liquid face cosmetic ever, I believe, but I played with it some as soon as it came in and I think I’m going to be okay with using it. It comes with a dropper applicator; I didn’t use the dropper but let a drop slide off of the end, dabbed the tiniest amount on my cheek, spread it out and it gave a beautiful sheen in a sweet ivory shade. I think it can be built up more but that was enough for me. I like it so far.

As I said earlier, I don’t have a lot of insights into the world of highlighters and bronzers. However, the plan is that by this time next year, I’ll have more to say, perhaps even a few used up or at least showing pan.

Guys, I think I’m gonna get the hang of bronzing this summer. It’s gonna happen. I don’t have a “summer color” – I am this “fair” (for Hawai‘i) medium all year round – my skin does not tan and I don’t care to – but I’m going to have a bronze glow this summer, albeit painted on while the rest of me remains pale.

It has, in fact, begun.

Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess

Teri Miyahira Beauty Bronzer in Faith

The Body Shop Honey Bronze in 03 Matte Medium

The tally – 4 single highlighters, 1 highlight in palette, 3 single bronzers, 3 bronzers in palette. I think that’s a good number in each category. I might have one highlighter still on my wishlist, but I don’t think I’ll be getting it, so I have no plans to pick up any more highlighters or bronzers. If I get any, it’ll most likely come from the TMB monthly box.
