My Colors Are Blush & Bashful: Blush Stock 2016

Post originally published by Jennifer X on Born Jennius, 28 May 2016.

Steel Magnolias, anyone? Anyone?

No? Okay.

It’s crazy that I have so many blushes! Blush is one of the areas of which I know very little. It’s been only the last three years that I have been acquiring and wearing blush regularly, practicing the application skills, and trying to learn one pink from the next. I think I’ve got enough to work with for quite a while.

Let’s take a look….

In Face Palettes
Too Faced A Few of My Favorite Things (Holiday 2013)
Raindrops on Roses
Melt Into Spring

Tarte Aqualillies (Summer 2013)

Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Blush Palette (2016)

Tarte Poppy Picnic Amazonian Clay Eye & Cheek Palette (2015/ 2016)

I haven’t used anything in the Too Faced A Few Of My Favorite Things Palette yet. I bought it more for the whole concept – some of the colors were named after lyrics from the song, matching the colors rather well, and it’s pretty. I do intend to use it eventually. The other palette listed that I have not used yet was a more recent purchase, the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Blush Palette. I like Stefani’s style, she reminds me of one of my friends, and of friends at a concert. Most makeup that I buy I do intend to use so this palette is another one.

I have used the two Tarte blushes though. Tarte is known for their blushes, and these are up to the brand’s quality, I think. I like Glisten just a bit more than Captivating just because I prefer pinks over more orange or warmer shades for blush, but they are both great.

One will see that most of my blushes are pinks.

Blushes – Unused
Milani – Tea Rose
Milani – Romantic Rose
MAC Guo Pei Collection – Lotus Blossom (LE 2015)
Maifanshi Cheek Color – PK 04 Pale Pink 1
Maifanshi Cheek Color – OR 02 Mandarin Orange 1

Yes, more unused blushes. I will use these, eventually. Broken record. Well, I might not use the Maifanshi Cheek Color in Mandarin Orange, because I don’t know if I’ll like an orange color on my face, so I might pass this on. I also don’t intend to use the MAC Guo Pei Blush in Lotus Blossom – I still might use it but it’ll have to be my last blush at hand or if I lost all the others. I bought this one for the unique packaging and the details of the design. I did swatch it, but I touched it ever so gently and carefully. I don’t get that crazy over packaging or design, but I appreciated the design of this one and it was worth it to me.

Blushes – In Rotation
NYX – Peach ^
MAC Tres Cheek Collection – Peony Petal (LE 2012) (now permanent)
MAC Tres Cheek Collection – Immortal Flower (LE 2012)
NARS – Deep Throat
Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour – Exposed
CAMP Cosmetics – Glamour Gangstah Gehm (LE 2015)
Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour – Video
Colourpop Super Shock Cheek – Cruel Intentions (LE 2015)
Teri Miyahira Beauty – Destiny (LE 2016)
Teri Miyahira Beauty – Hope (LE 2016)

NYX Peach is one of the first blushes that I picked out on my own. It has shattered before, so I had to re-press it; I think the pigmentation became stronger after that, so I just use it more lightly. Being that I was going to try to level up my blush game (what?), and that soon after MAC came out with a limited edition blush collection, I picked up two of them. Peony Petal is such a beautiful cool-toned blue-pink – one of my favored shades. Immortal Flower takes work to swatch, but it shows up on the cheeks with a healthy light peach coloring.

NARS is also known for their blush department. Deep Throat is not the most talked-about NARS blush, but I thought it was more to my liking. I bought it for one of my birthdays. I think it’s the raciest of names of any makeup product I own, and I would cringe if anyone asked me what I was wearing for blush if it was this one, so while it is pretty and good, I might pass it on; I’m considering it. With a slightly less racy name is Tarte’s Exposed.  I’d call it a muted rose. It’s goes well with any look I do, so I reach for it especially when I’m not sure what else would work for what I want.

Glamour Gangstah Gehm was a collaboration between CAMP Cosmetics and Kristen Gehm onYouTube. I use it for when I need to add some warmth to the face. Urban Decay’s Video is similar to Tarte’s Exposed in that I think it would work with any look; I think it’s slightly more towards brown while Exposed has a hint of pink. I heard a lot about Colourpop so I wanted to try some of their products, including the Super Shock Cheek in Cruel Intentions. I’d say it’s a roasted tomato red, or something. It’s the only close-to-cream blush that I have, kind of like a putty texture in the pot. It goes on and blends out surprisingly easy.

Teri Miyahira Beauty is a recently launched brand, coming out in a monthly subscription box for now. I’m still testing them out, but this blushing amateur is enjoying them. They kick up powder, but I just tap off the extra, go with a light hand, and paint on the blush. They feel so smooth and they give good color! Hope looks kind of orange brown in the pan, but it comes off as a light nude on me when I use it lightly, almost like Video. Destiny is going to be one of my favorites, I can already tell, I think. It’s similar to Peony Petal but less blue.

[Psst! Teri Miyahira just opened her online shop! One could sign up for the monthly box and/ or shop individual items. Yay! Link at the end.]

I thought it would be useful to have a set of comparison swatches between the different shade groups of blushes that I have – the used ones.

  • NYX – Peach
  • MAC Tres Cheek Collection – Peony Petal (LE 2012) (now permanent)
  • Teri Miyahira Beauty – Destiny (LE 2016)

The pinks look quite similar, all kind of on the cool side but Peony Petal (middle) still stands out as the most cool-toned. Also, they all have a satin finish.

(clockwise, from top left):

  • NARS – Deep Throat
  • Tarte Poppy Picnic – Glisten (LE)
  • CAMP Cosmetics – Glamour Gangstah Gehm (LE 2015)

They’re fairly similar in base color, but the finishes are different. Deep Throat has a pale golden shimmer. Glisten has a yellow golden shimmer that is less subtle. GGG has fine silver glitter dispersed through it that isn’t so noticeable on the face.

  • Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour – Exposed
  • Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour – Video
  • Colourpop Super Shock Cheek – Cruel Intentions (LE 2015)

The next three are not so similar to each other nor to the others. I have them all swatched heavily here, but Exposed and Video, used lightly and built up to depth, are the ones I go to for an easy match to any look. Exposed is more pink while Video is more towards brown. Cruel Intentions is my only red blush, also used lightly so that it’s not so red on me. Exposed has a subtle satin finish, while the other two are both matte.

MAC Tres Cheek Collection – Immortal Flower (LE 2012)
Teri Miyahira Beauty – Hope (LE 2016)
Tarte Aqualillies – Captivating

Immortal Flower is sort of a melon orange with a satin finish. Hope and Captivating both have a slight satin finish; Hope is slightly more towards brown while Captivating has slightly more orange.

I know, this is enough blush for a lifetime. I don’t have a lot of insight to blush yet – formulas, shades, techniques, etc. – but I will. I’m hoping to have some thoughts on them by next year as I’ve started using them more regularly.

Also, most of the ones that I have were limited editions, and unfortunately I don’t know enough to point you to dupes for them. I still wanted to share all of the blushes that I have (an inventory) and show swatches in case any are re-promoted or added to the permanent line. MAC made most of the blushes from that Tres Cheek Collection permanent many months after that collection had passed; Peony Petal was made available again in the permanent line.

Charis. Her blush is always perfect.

I look forward to the coming year of painting on my blush, becoming more skilled with it and more knowledgeable of it. Maybe I could even use one up? One could always try!
