Beauty Report: May 2016

Post originally published by Jennifer X on Born Jennius, 31 May 2016.

For the month of May, it was mostly about trying out some new-to-me products and doing pretty much the same face every day for work.

Maybelline Dream Velvet Matte Foundation in 70 Pure Beige
The NYX Q10 Elixir is nice as a primer. I think it helped my makeup go on more smoothly and possibly last better but I can’t say for sure. It has a light scent that I can’t quite place but it doesn’t linger long. I like it so far. What I am really impressed with is the Maybelline Dream Matte Velvet Foundation. 70 Pure Beige is a good match for me. It’s like a mousse in consistency, smooths out easily, and evens out the look of my skin. It looks like it will wear thickly but it doesn’t at all. It’s so comfortable that I forget that I have it on. Both the NYX Q10 and the Maybelline Dream Matte were from the HeyClairemas Prize.

Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Bronzer sample

The Teri Miyahira Beauty Box products this month included the blush in Hope and bronzer (highlighter/ blush) in Chance. The back label says it’s a bronzer; on me, Chance is a highlighter with light pink shimmer. This was the first time that I used a highlighter consistently and I think I’m getting the hang of it. It can give high shine though if used heavily. Hope also has to be applied lightly as it gives off great color. Lightly, it gives me a very dusty pink flush. I like them both. I am trying to use up a sample of Estee Lauder’s Bronze Goddess. It’s a medium matte red-brown base with some pink shimmer mixed in; the shimmer is subtle on the face. It is pretty, I like it, it gives a natural tan look, but I probably won’t be buying the full-size – I have other bronzers to use, one of which is from a previous TMBeauty Box that is natural, cruelty-free, and vegan.

I tried all of the products in the Tarte Poppy Picnic Palette, but for eyes, I mostly used Sweet Tea on the lid, Picnic Basket to deepen the outer corners, Peach Poppy in the above the crease, and then Barefoot to highlight under the brows – pretty much what I did every day. I lined the bottom lash line with Urban Decay’s Darkside.

I used up the Lorac Cobra Mascara – this I might buy in full-size later on. The formula was okay. It didn’t irritate my eyes and my lashes still felt soft. I liked the brush though. The shape of it allowed me to get to the shorter outer lashes more easily than most other lash bristles. I did not like the MAC mascara. It made my lashes crispy and brittle feeling. The Benefit Lash Primer was okay as a base for the L’Oreal Voluminous.

Maybelline Vivids in Shocking Coral
L'Oreal Collection Privee in J.Lo Jennifer's Nude
Bottom: NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien
Colourpop Lippiestix in Lumiere
The Too Faced La Matte in The New Black is a beautiful color, but the formula is a little tricky. It’s thick and can cling to any dryness on the lips so exfoliation and balm is a must. While I’m not that crazy about the formula, I’m still going to use this and another one that I have because the colors are pretty and they were also a part of the HeyClairemas prize. Plus, it’ll make me take better care of my lips.

Otherwise, I’m trying to use up the NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien. It’s a good color for me. I probably won’t buy the full-size because I have other colors and formulas that I like just a bit better. Also, I like that the name is from a garden in Japan, but it rubs me wrong that it gets mispronounced so much. Silly, I know, but that’s it. In case you’re wondering, it’s like ree-koo-gee-en with a hard “g” sound; just take it a syllable at a time and you’ll be fine.

I had wanted to use up a scent sample and chose Tocca Florence, but I might be allergic to one of the ingredients. It’s a dabber sample (not a spray) and so I would get it on my finger and then place it on my wrists. I’ve developed a serious rash and/or eczema attack on the finger that I would use. It could be other things too, but I’m going to lay off of Florence for now and see if the rash clears up. I used about half of it. Other than that, it’s a beautiful floral scent that unfortunately I don’t think matches with my… self-image? I’m still a fan of Tocca fragrances, so if you don’t have such sensitive skin and like florals, try Tocca, but use testers first just in case (that’s with any new fragrance).

Oh, and a note: The Rimmel Stay Matte Powder had shattered and I was done with trying to re-press it again. I just completely crushed it and put it in an old Sei Bella container as a loose powder. It’s still good.

Another note: The deodorant (from April’s Beauty Report) doesn’t smell all that manly, or that womanly. I can’t exactly describe it. I’d say it’s along the lines of Cool Water, either the men’s or the women’s one. It smells good.

Wow, having done practically the same face all month long, I didn’t think I’d have much to write. Go figure. I hope it was helpful in some way.

Come on, June, let’s see whatchu got!

Left two: Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation in 123
Right two: Maybelline Dream Velvet Matte Foundation in 70 Pure Beige

Pure Beige looks rather dark, but near the bottom I sheered
it out more and it looks a lot closer to the 123 shade.

I included a swatch of Too Faced The New Black because
I didn't swatch it for the Lipstick Stock post. You can find
the swatches of the other colors here: The Lipstick Enthusiast.

A close up of the MAC mascara wand. It's like this all around.

The update photo for the Maybelline Color Tattoo in
Bad to the Bronze - almost finished!

My Colors Are Blush & Bashful: Blush Stock 2016

Post originally published by Jennifer X on Born Jennius, 28 May 2016.

Steel Magnolias, anyone? Anyone?

No? Okay.

It’s crazy that I have so many blushes! Blush is one of the areas of which I know very little. It’s been only the last three years that I have been acquiring and wearing blush regularly, practicing the application skills, and trying to learn one pink from the next. I think I’ve got enough to work with for quite a while.

Let’s take a look….

I haven’t used anything in the Too Faced A Few Of My Favorite Things Palette yet. I bought it more for the whole concept – some of the colors were named after lyrics from the song, matching the colors rather well, and it’s pretty. I do intend to use it eventually. The other palette listed that I have not used yet was a more recent purchase, the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Blush Palette. I like Stefani’s style, she reminds me of one of my friends, and of friends at a concert. Most makeup that I buy I do intend to use so this palette is another one.

I have used the two Tarte blushes though. Tarte is known for their blushes, and these are up to the brand’s quality, I think. I like Glisten just a bit more than Captivating just because I prefer pinks over more orange or warmer shades for blush, but they are both great.

One will see that most of my blushes are pinks.

Blushes – Unused
Milani – Tea Rose
Milani – Romantic Rose
MAC Guo Pei Collection – Lotus Blossom (LE 2015)
Maifanshi Cheek Color – PK 04 Pale Pink 1
Maifanshi Cheek Color – OR 02 Mandarin Orange 1

Yes, more unused blushes. I will use these, eventually. Broken record. Well, I might not use the Maifanshi Cheek Color in Mandarin Orange, because I don’t know if I’ll like an orange color on my face, so I might pass this on. I also don’t intend to use the MAC Guo Pei Blush in Lotus Blossom – I still might use it but it’ll have to be my last blush at hand or if I lost all the others. I bought this one for the unique packaging and the details of the design. I did swatch it, but I touched it ever so gently and carefully. I don’t get that crazy over packaging or design, but I appreciated the design of this one and it was worth it to me.

Blushes – In Rotation
NYX – Peach ^
MAC Tres Cheek Collection – Peony Petal (LE 2012) (now permanent)
MAC Tres Cheek Collection – Immortal Flower (LE 2012)
NARS – Deep Throat
Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour – Exposed
CAMP Cosmetics – Glamour Gangstah Gehm (LE 2015)
Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour – Video
Colourpop Super Shock Cheek – Cruel Intentions (LE 2015)
Teri Miyahira Beauty – Destiny (LE 2016)
Teri Miyahira Beauty – Hope (LE 2016)

NYX Peach is one of the first blushes that I picked out on my own. It has shattered before, so I had to re-press it; I think the pigmentation became stronger after that, so I just use it more lightly. Being that I was going to try to level up my blush game (what?), and that soon after MAC came out with a limited edition blush collection, I picked up two of them. Peony Petal is such a beautiful cool-toned blue-pink – one of my favored shades. Immortal Flower takes work to swatch, but it shows up on the cheeks with a healthy light peach coloring.

L-R: NYX Peach, MAC Peony Petal,
MAC Immortal Flower, NARS Deep Throat,
Tarte Exposed

NARS is also known for their blush department. Deep Throat is not the most talked-about NARS blush, but I thought it was more to my liking. I bought it for one of my birthdays. I think it’s the raciest of names of any makeup product I own, and I would cringe if anyone asked me what I was wearing for blush if it was this one, so while it is pretty and good, I might pass it on; I’m considering it. With a slightly less racy name is Tarte’s Exposed.  I’d call it a muted rose. It’s goes well with any look I do, so I reach for it especially when I’m not sure what else would work for what I want.

Glamour Gangstah Gehm was a collaboration between CAMP Cosmetics and Kristen Gehm onYouTube. I use it for when I need to add some warmth to the face. Urban Decay’s Video is similar to Tarte’s Exposed in that I think it would work with any look; I think it’s slightly more towards brown while Exposed has a hint of pink. I heard a lot about Colourpop so I wanted to try some of their products, including the Super Shock Cheek in Cruel Intentions. I’d say it’s a roasted tomato red, or something. It’s the only close-to-cream blush that I have, kind of like a putty texture in the pot. It goes on and blends out surprisingly easy.

L-R: CAMP Glamour Gangstah Gehm,
Urban Decay Video, Colourpop Cruel Intentions,
Teri Miyahira Beauty Destiny and Hope

Top: indoor
Bottom: outdoor
Teri Miyahira Beauty is a recently launched brand, coming out in a monthly subscription box for now. I’m still testing them out, but this blushing amateur is enjoying them. They kick up powder, but I just tap off the extra, go with a light hand, and paint on the blush. They feel so smooth and they give good color! Hope looks kind of orange brown in the pan, but it comes off as a light nude on me when I use it lightly, almost like Video. Destiny is going to be one of my favorites, I can already tell, I think. It’s similar to Peony Petal but less blue.

[Psst! Teri Miyahira just opened her online shop! One could sign up for the monthly box and/ or shop individual items. Yay! Link at the end.]

I thought it would be useful to have a set of comparison swatches between the different shade groups of blushes that I have – the used ones.

  • NYX – Peach
  • MAC Tres Cheek Collection – Peony Petal (LE 2012) (now permanent)
  • Teri Miyahira Beauty – Destiny (LE 2016)

The pinks look quite similar, all kind of on the cool side but Peony Petal (middle) still stands out as the most cool-toned. Also, they all have a satin finish.

(clockwise, from top left):

  • NARS – Deep Throat
  • Tarte Poppy Picnic – Glisten (LE)
  • CAMP Cosmetics – Glamour Gangstah Gehm (LE 2015)

They’re fairly similar in base color, but the finishes are different. Deep Throat has a pale golden shimmer. Glisten has a yellow golden shimmer that is less subtle. GGG has fine silver glitter dispersed through it that isn’t so noticeable on the face.

  • Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour – Exposed
  • Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour – Video
  • Colourpop Super Shock Cheek – Cruel Intentions (LE 2015)

The next three are not so similar to each other nor to the others. I have them all swatched heavily here, but Exposed and Video, used lightly and built up to depth, are the ones I go to for an easy match to any look. Exposed is more pink while Video is more towards brown. Cruel Intentions is my only red blush, also used lightly so that it’s not so red on me. Exposed has a subtle satin finish, while the other two are both matte.

MAC Tres Cheek Collection – Immortal Flower (LE 2012)
Teri Miyahira Beauty – Hope (LE 2016)
Tarte Aqualillies – Captivating

Immortal Flower is sort of a melon orange with a satin finish. Hope and Captivating both have a slight satin finish; Hope is slightly more towards brown while Captivating has slightly more orange.

I know, this is enough blush for a lifetime. I don’t have a lot of insight to blush yet – formulas, shades, techniques, etc. – but I will. I’m hoping to have some thoughts on them by next year as I’ve started using them more regularly.

Also, most of the ones that I have were limited editions, and unfortunately I don’t know enough to point you to dupes for them. I still wanted to share all of the blushes that I have (an inventory) and show swatches in case any are re-promoted or added to the permanent line. MAC made most of the blushes from that Tres Cheek Collection permanent many months after that collection had passed; Peony Petal was made available again in the permanent line.

Charis. Her blush is always perfect.

I look forward to the coming year of painting on my blush, becoming more skilled with it and more knowledgeable of it. Maybe I could even use one up? One could always try!

The Week’s Peeks: Getting Through a Trying Week

Post originally published by Jennifer X on Born Jennius, 25 May 2016.

I had a trying week. I’ll probably post a whiny story with more detail later on, but the big thing was having trouble with 2 different cars on the same day. Hopefully, they’ll be easy (and not-too-expensive) fixes.

Let me say: I love my parents.

It was a good week for rainbow-sightings, a remembrance of God’s promise not to wipe us off the earth again. It seemed like rainbows all week, and so to have one early in the week, during the trying situations, and then at the end of the week, it really feels like God was saying, “I got you.”

And Otto Cake – always a good pick-me-up after… any time!

This weekend, I finally tackled decluttering of the old university work. Yes, I kept pretty much everything, just in case but I think I’m in the clear to let it go. I still kept some interesting readings and my writings. I got rid of 2+ years of letters from a former friend. Sweet Pea kept lying on top of any piles I made, so I had about three piles of varying heights to be recycled.

  • How was your week?

Here are the Week’s Peeks from the week of May 15th.
