The Lipstick Enthusiast: Swatch & See

Post originally published by Jennifer X on Born Jennius, 30 April 2016.

Some of the lip colors look the same or similar, so I thought I would swatch them in groups – nudes, pinks, fuchsias, brights, and the reds – in order to better see which ones were more or less similar than others. Some of the colors don’t fit exactly in the categories but I didn’t want to have a lot of categories.

Here we go!

MAC Alluring Aquatics Cremesheen – Mystical (LE)
NARS Satin Lip Pencil – Rikugien
Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Collection – Ex-Girlfriend (LE)
Colourpop Lippie Stix – Lumiere
MAC Select – So Select (LE)

Top: Indoor
Bottom: Outdoor

The nudes all look very similar in the tubes, though one could tell that some are probably matte. Mystical, Rikugien, and Ex-Girlfriend have satin finishes, with Ex-Girlfriend being a sheer formula. Mystical is slightly darker than Rikugien, while Rikugien has slightly more pink with Mystical being more towards brown. Ex-Girlfriend is a peachy pink with (gold?) shimmer.

Lumiere and So Select are the mattes and they are very similar; on the lips, it’s difficult to tell which is which. I’d say that Lumiere is slightly more purple/ mauve. As I type this, the MAC website still has So Select available, but one has to sign up as a Select member (it’s free), which is their recently launched new point program; it can be ordered online and I think it can be bought in store (though I can’t vouch for that). As far as I know, Colourpop is only online through their website but is more affordable, so that might be a consideration if you want something like So Select or Lumiere.

Rikugien and Lumiere are the ones that are still available in the permanent lines. They’re both comfortable and have a slimmer design compared to a regular lipstick. Rikugien does have to be sharpened every so often. Lumiere smells like vanilla and is a twist-up product.

Favorite of the group: Mystical, a nice dusty rose, easy to wear for every day, and that water drop tube – so pretty!

Maybelline Color Whisper – Lust for Blush
Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche – Sugarcane
Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche – Sorbet
Urban Decay Revolution – Fiend

Top: Indoor
Bottom: Outdoor
As the line name “Color Whisper” suggests, Lust for Blush is a sheer formula that still gives decent color; I can’t find it anywhere locally anymore, but it’s still available on Maybelline’s website. Sugarcane and Sorbet have a creamy finish with slight shine while Fiend has a satin finish. Sorbet and Fiend are the two that are more similar in the group; Sorbet is lighter and brighter. Formula-wise, both are comfortable but Fiend has more slip. Sugarcane and Sorbet, being from Bite Beauty, are made from natural and organic ingredients (better if some should end up inside the mouth; probably breaks down faster than traditional lipstick and so should be used up sooner); they also smell like lemon.

Not necessarily the favorite, as I recently got this one, but
here is Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche in Sorbet

Favorite of the group: none, I couldn’t choose one.

Maybelline Color Whisper – Pin Up Peach
Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids – Shocking Coral
Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm – Unapologetic
Bite Beauty Matte Crème Lip Crayon – Sucre

Top: Indoor
Bottom: Outdoor
This group includes the peach/ coral colors. Pin Up Peach is sheer with good color and slight gold shimmer. Shocking Coral is lighter than Unapologetic; it also smells like a Crayola crayon while Unapologetic smells like mint (and has that mild mint-tingle sensation). Unapologetic is brighter than Sucre; I’d say that their formulas feel very similar (both matte) aside from the mint-tingle and Sucre smells like an orange creamsicle.

Favorite of the group: Sucre, for the comfortable wear, natural, organic ingredients, and the creamsicle scent.

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids – Vivid Rose
MAC Moxie^
Bite Beauty Luminous Crème – Quince^
Colourpop Lippie Stix – Heart On
Urban Decay Matte Revolution – After Dark

Top: Indoor
Bottom: Outdoor

I have no idea what happened with
these swatches - looking wild!
My favorite lip color group! From the left, the group goes from a red-fuchsia towards the purple-fuchsia. Vivid Rose and Quince are creams, while Moxie, Heart On, and After Dark are mattes. Vivid Rose, Moxie, Quince, and Heart On are quite bright; After Dark is deeper, my only “vampy” color because I don’t like dark lip colors on me. Vivid Rose has a Crayola crayon smell. Moxie and Heart On smell like vanilla. Quince and After Dark don’t really have scents, or they’re very mild scents.

I haven’t worn Quince or After Dark in public yet because they’re both recent purchases. I’ve gotten compliments from strangers on Heart On.

This. Is. Moxie.

Favorite of the group: Ohh…. Moxie. Or Heart On. I think.

MAC Marilyn Monroe Collection – Charmed, I’m Sure (LE)
Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Collection – Spiderweb (LE)
Bite Beauty High Pigment Lip Pencil – Pomegranate
Colourpop Lippie Stix – Fighter
Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Collection – 714 (LE)

Top: Indoor
Bottom: Outdoor
Ah, the reds. Five years ago, I would have never thought that I would own any red lipstick. It just seemed so bold, even though I’ll wear bright fuchsia and that can be bold. Then MAC came out with the Marilyn Monroe Collection, which premiered in their stores near my birthday in 2012 (I think) and the makeup artist used Charmed, I’m Sure on me. I was still intimidated by the red, but I thought I’d be brave and buy it (and I have worn it since); I call it my “gateway red.”

Charmed, Fighter, and 714 are mattes; Pomegranate and Spiderweb are creams. Other than the finish, they are all very similar! I think in person, Charmed has a definite blue-base and 714 leans warm and is slightly brighter than the rest. Spiderweb, Pomegranate, and Fighter are very much the same color as far as I can tell in any light. Charmed, I’m Sure and Fighter smell like vanilla. The Gwens don’t have a detectable scent and Pomegranate has a very mild scent that I don’t know how to describe.

Favorite of the group: the gateway red  Charmed, I’m Sure, for sentimentality, being blue-based (helps teeth look whiter), and that beautiful print of Marilyn.

(LE) Limited Edition

A few more swatches:

Bare lips, for comparison
Colourpop Matte Lippie Stix Lumiere
Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Quince^
Colourpop Matte Lippie Stix Heart On

All of the lip swatches were taken indoors.

I hope this was helpful. I tried to give the points that stand out so if there are other questions, you’re welcome to ask. I ran through it a bit, as I’ve already talked about them in the previous stock post [here]

I showed the Limited Edition ones still because some are still currently available (So Select, some Gwen Stefani ones), sometimes colors will be repromoted, or if I come to a dupe when I do another post like this, I can let you know. The swatches are online now, my little database here, because I know I will want to find a replacement match for some of them like Moxie, for when I use it up!

As I’ve gone through my lip products over time, I’ve passed on others that I liked almost as much so that I could keep down the number that I have. I think I have kept a good mix. I’d like to try a few other brands/ collections, but I’d like to make good use of the ones that I already have.

Bite Beauty is starting to become my preferred brand for lip products. They’re comfortable, wear well, smell good, and the natural/ organic formula is a plus. I can’t see myself giving any of them up in future declutters.
