Face Files: Skinny Jeans and Spring Green

Starting to get a little more colorful and adventurous!

Did I say that I like blues and greens for eye makeup? I think I have. This day, I wanted to play with both. Looking through the eye shadows for a light green, I decided to use NYX Spring Leaf from a trio and then L’Oreal Skinny Jeans for the blues.

As bases, I used two Maybelline Color Tattoos in Hydrangea Hype (lid) and Icy Mint (above crease). Skinny Jeans 1 went on the inner half of the lid while Skinny Jeans 3 went on the outer half and deepening up the outer corner, pulling it lightly into the crease. Over Icy Mint, I placed Spring Leaf. Under the eyebrows went Skinny Jeans 2.

Radium lined the inner half of the lower lash line. Initially, I was going to put some purple shadow in the look, but switched it to using Ransom to line the outer half of the lower lash line. I made a thin line with Skinny Jeans 4 just above Radium and Ransom. I lined the top lash line with Perversion, setting it with Skinny Jeans 4.

The rest of the face used mostly the usual suspects listed above. For the lips, I wanted something to match closely with Glamour Gangstah Gehm and compliment the eye look well; I chose Pin Up Peach and I think it worked.

Not too bad, right?

If I did this again, I think I would add in a medium green or a light brown cream base to help bring the green out and give more dimension in that area. The crease probably could have used more definition between the green and blue and more definition for the lower lash line with a black or nude in the waterline. I would also bring the purple liner in a little more and/or make it a little thicker; one of the reasons why Ransom doesn’t show up much in the pictures is because it is a purple with a blue shift, sort of, so it blends in with the blue nicely but maybe could use a little help there.

The limited edition [LE] and discontinued items:
  • For the blush, one can substitute with a medium peach blush, something to warm up the look while not competing but complimenting the eyes. I think a good one would be NARS Deep Throat blush; I’d give more options but I don’t have a lot of blushes or knowledge of blushes.
  • For the color tattoos, substitute a skin-toned primer/ cream with well-pigmented eye shadows, or if one has/ comes across another light green and a light blue cream base. At the time of writing/ posting this, Hydrangea Hype (the blue one) might still be found at the drugstore, but not for long; one might be able to find the color tattoos at online stores/ auctions.
  • For the green eye shadow, use any light or kind of bright green eye shadow you already have or find. I can’t think of a specific example, as the only one I have that is close has also been discontinued (yes, I have my shadows for a long, long time).

If anything else was limited edition or discontinued, I don’t know. Of course, any of the products can be substituted out for what one already has and/ or prefers – just get out your favorite blues and greens, or any other color combination!

Ehmm… I don’t actually wear skinny jeans. I mean, I wear jeans, they’re just not skinny. But hey, look – I put on a blue jeans-colored shirt! A small step up from the usual home-y tank – what I’m willing to do for my readers on occasion. ;)

Then I walked out of the house like this to pick up dinner, yes, I did.

Healthy Go: My Achy Breaky… Body

Sometimes - many times - I have to do the dumb goofy title.

I’m still alive! It’s been more than a month since I’ve done an HG update. Our house is just recovering from illness. Dad got sick, and it tends to linger for him. I was on the verge of being sick for a few weeks. Mom got sick, and then I really came down with something in full force the next day. I am a complete baby when I am sick, but also I really could barely get out of bed for the first two days. I was an achy sweaty miserableness.

It didn’t help that the weather has been moody. Cold. Vog. Hot. Cold. Windy. Hot. Rainy. Hot. Cold. Colder. Hot. :/

I am so glad that I do not live alone. I ... would be a gross mess.

So I ate some junk. And I ate some health. With a whole house not feeling well, one eats what one can get. My diet didn’t change too much except for eating somewhat less, still eating fruits but also had some potato chips (one of my old friends I try not to visit anymore).

Once I was feeling well enough, I attacked the laundry and tidied up my room a little more. I’m edging ever slowly towards having a workout area in my room again for home days.

I’m very rarely not thinking about something, but also I have had some stuff on my mind lately. I’ve been like this for months now. It kind of takes the energy I might put towards focusing on HG stuff, know what I mean?

All that to say that aside from looking like death for a few days, I am aware that my HG posts have not been at all inspiring or stuff for a while now.

We celebrated a birthday recently (not mine) so I had the lobster, with a baked potato (butter on the side) and fresh veggies. I saved the second lobster tail and half of the potato for another meal.

I leave you now with food pictures from the past month or so, and a cat.

Face Files: Sunrise Blue Siren

On an off day, I wanted to play around a little with the Revlon Colorstay 16 Hour Eye Shadow quad in Siren. After applying its taupes and grays, I wanted to add color, and as I might have mentioned before, I like blue eye makeup. Enter, stage lash line: the NYX Slide On, Glide On Eye Liner in Sunrise Blue

Siren numbers:
1- top left
2- top right
3- bottom left
4- bottom right
Left to right: Siren 1, 2, 3, & 4
Bottom: Sunrise Blue

The eye shadow quad isn’t that impressive, but pulled together into a look, I think it works fine enough. After laying out the shadow primer, I covered the lid with Siren 2. Siren 3 was used above the crease. Softly between Siren 2 and 3, and deepening the outer corner was Siren 4. I placed Siren 1 under the eyebrows (lightly) and as an inner corner highlight.

Perversion lined the top lash line, with Siren 4 on top to set it. I lined the bottom lash line with Sunrise Blue. I didn’t want added shimmer on the bottom, so I brought out 2 of Quartz Quartet to soften up the edge of the blue liner. Using a very thin and stiff liner brush, I carefully defined the top of the blue liner with Siren 4.

Siren has a lot of fallout, the shimmer and the dark of 4, so it was a good idea to do the eyes first and then the rest of the face. Foundation and all that were the usual suspects. The eye look was very cool, so I added warmth to the rest of the face with Bronze Goddess and Glamour Gangstah Gehm. For the lips, I tried N9 first, a sheer rosy brown, but didn’t quite like it with the eyes. Wanting something cool yet with some color, I replaced the lip color with Lust for Blush – much better, in my opinion.

Maybelline Color Whisper - Lust for Blush
Probably not a look for the everyday or casual outing, yet I’m quite pleased with it. I think I’m improving on the colorful bottom lash line thing. That, or, this blue is just beautiful. I’m disappointed with Siren 2, as that was the least pigmented and least smooth shadow and the one I wanted most in the quad.

Jennius Reads: About Mozart

At what point does one say that there are enough books about a fascinating person from the past? 200+ years after his death, are there enough books about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart? Apparently not, for in 2013, Mozart: A Life by Paul Johnson was published, and I am not complaining.

It was another day of hurrying around the public library, looking for study material for a class, hoping to beat the parking meter time. Building up my muscles by lugging around a hefty stack of already 10+ books that may or may not pertain to class, I wanted to pick out a “for fun” read. Taking a quick glance at the music section, Mozart came into mind. I found the biography subsection and scanned the spines.

I think I chose historian Paul Johnson’s book against just one other. Johnson has other biographies under his belt, like ones on Churchill and Socrates, as well as titles of history subjects, and I was intrigued that Mozart… was quite a recent title.

Johnson ordered the chapters for 5 main periods of Mozart’s life that cover his early years, proficiency with instruments, married life, his contributions particular to opera, and the last years of his life. Woven throughout all of it were comments and mentions of Mozart’s many works as they related to the subject at hand, yet seamlessly so that the reading journey was comfortable while fully satisfied.

One of the interesting discoveries for me was that his family wrote many and detailed letters, a practice which is wonderful for a biographer of such a person. This was the first Mozart biography I had ever read; I didn’t know what I expected to find and so it was refreshing to learn that not only was Mozart endowed with musical talents, but that he also knew a great deal about the matter and could write about his writing of music, what he was working on, trying out, intended, etc.

I also got the sense that though a genius, Mozart was not “mad” in the way that one might think is necessary to or accompanies genius. People liked him. He was passionate but didn’t make others “pay” to be around his gifting, nor was he narrow-minded about what music (or his music) must be. That his gifting came with such prolific breadth and depth is just… what word is there… astounding – that will have to do.

Mozart: A Life was an enjoyable read – I recommend it, about a 10/10 for the classical music or biography enthusiast (having played the clarinet in the high school symphonic wind ensemble, I have a special fondness for Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622). It can be read in a matter of hours. Johnson certainly does his research while infusing his own passion for the subject in the writing.

*It has been many, many years since I have written a book report of sorts – I hope this post did not offend. :)

Face Files: Brown-Eyed Blues

Hello!

Blue is one of the colors that I gravitate towards in eye makeup. It’s so pretty and I just like it for my eyes. I’ll play it up for a dinner out or tone it down for a casual occasion. I don’t need any more blue eye shadows, but I want to buy more whenever I see one and have to practice self-control to walk away and leave it behind.

On this day, I used a blue (Sei Bella Caribbean) as the center of attraction, in and above the fold – how I tend to wear it for a more everyday kind of look.

The blue is a bit faded in the fold of my eyelid, which is typical of anything I place in that area. I haven’t figured out a way for that not to happen, but one hardly ever sees that part that I don’t worry about it much. I’m thinking of picking up a blue cream shadow to use as a base for something like this, to help the blue really pop. For now, I’ll work with what I’ve got.

I like how the peach/ coral blush and lipstick subtly play off of the blue eye shadow while warming up the face. I am still working out my blush technique but I think I’m getting there.

Almost two full weeks into March and already, I have used almost every single item on the list for themonth – good job.
