When I am home, I will play around with products about which I’m excited or not so sure. My skill level with makeup is very low, like a 2, so take that into account. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to wear Shanghai Sizzle on its own, but to not much improvement.

Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain in Shanghai Sizzle:

First off, I am clumsy with liquid lip products in general, which includes this Moisture Stain. It’s difficult for me to control the applicator in order to get a decent shape of color on my lips. I would say that its true color is a bright poppy red, but can be sheered out to not be so bold.

I don’t think this makes the teeth look whiter or more yellowed, so I suppose it has a neutral tone. My teeth are a light yellow, I’d say; I tried taking a smiling picture to show the effect, if any.

If I use a thin layer, this stain settles at the borders and into the grooves of my lips, making it look like just a thick layer of fruit punch. It does look a little better after a few minutes of sitting. If I use a thicker layer, the color is more even but again, it’s difficult to control, and it gets gooey. It starts to gather where my lips meet, and then I’ll have strings forming when I open my mouth – not attractive, I think. I’m nervous to go outside with my hair down, or the wind might blow my hair around, picking up some of the stain, making unauthorized streaks on the rest of my face, which hasn’t happened yet only because I keep checking my face in the mirror.

However, I have found 2 way that I can use it up. The first is to wear it as more of a lip gloss on top of something else. In the pictures, I have it over the Cherry lip pencil. I lined the lips, filled it all in, and then put the stain over it. I still checked the mirror every so often for any errant hair painting. The other way would be to use it in two thin layers, patted out with a finger, and lined with a pencil (line lips first, then pat out stain). I prefer the first way as it still looks more finished and fuller.

To summarize: I’m disappointed, but I still like it – it’s mostly my clumsiness with this product so I can’t use it alone – it’s a pretty color.

I listed all the other products on my face also because this look was a part using my February 2015 Beauty Palette items.

One positive: I am starting to get more used to seeing myself wear red lips.

Healthy Go: Vooooooooog!

Oh, Volcano,

How wonderous and marvelous are
Thy lava shows,
Releasing thy sulfurous airs!

Or something like that. The vog has been crazy lately, making me tired, nauseated at times, with allergy symptoms, and shortness of breath. The last couple days have brought on the headaches. I have this taste on my tongue like… like I’ve been licking a rock. A friend posted a picture from his balcony on a hill; about a third of the scene was the city below and then the rest is just gray air.

Pray for those whom are suffering greatly from this vog.

So… trying to catch up on the past few weeks…

Happy First, Aju!

One Friday, I was at a friends’ place most of the day and then slept over, so that’s why no post. The next day, I woke up early to help out with their daughter’s first birthday party. Where HG is concerned, I got a WORKOUT that day!

As much as I’d like to think that I’m strong and can hang with the guys, I’m not-so-much. I was expecting more of the guys to be there, but no problem – I’ll try to carry any heavy thing I can, do whatever physical labor I can. I carried a bunch of stuff from the loading zone to the site, including a couple tables that I was just tall enough to lift a couple inches off the ground and awkwardly carry. Hey, I didn’t hurt my back, and I was properly sore the next day while still able to move my limbs well.

Friends were well-prepared with everything, especially food! And people kept bringing more… so, yes, I had pretzels and doughnuts and brownies and other stuff. I had to be Good Aunty and help the birthday girl eat, right? I threw in some tangerines and stuff for some balance.

I had a good time. Well, aside from the creepy old guy at a nearby gathering who watched me for some time after I had walked back from the restrooms, passing him at a safe distance; I stopped drinking so much water after that.

And, good news: I don’t scare the baby! :D

Campbell's Chunky Chicken Noodle Soup

Last week, no post due to some vog issues. Today was almost another no post due to vog issues, tiredness aside from vog issues, and also computer issues.

Still getting at least 40 minutes of walking and at least 2 flights of stairs, 3 times a week. Walked a dog once. I’ve fallen back on drinking iced tea, so haven’t been reaching the water goals; I could use a new water bottle, probably a stainless steel one. Haven’t been taking too many HG photos lately, so I’m spotty on what I’ve been eating. Fruits are still a go, Snapea Crisps, White Cheddar Baked Puffs, corned beef hash with corn, soups, almonds, string cheese, much more.

Oh! I almost have a good workout space cleared out again in my room! I’m excited. And, it’s starting to look much more manageable for the future.

So, yes, I am still alive – thank you. Hopefully some of the vog will lift and clear out of my lungs and brain for better and more regular posts.

Simplicity Bites: Stacks, Nails, Repurposing, and No Buys

I’m not sure how often I’ll have something to say or show for my simplifying efforts, so I thought I’d share a few recent things.

I can see more carpet! The cat is hiding a good portion, but I promise that there is carpet directly under her (photos intentionally made blurry). Now, some of the carpet clearing is because I stacked things higher, but I did also get rid of more junk and sort through another pile of books to be given away. The cats continue their threat to knock over any pile I make; it’s been a good motivator to continue this process so that eventually, there may be no stacks for them to knock over.

Another thing I’ve realized is that I need to have the stacks be out in the open, not hiding behind anything. Then I see them and will do something with them in time. Usually, I would push piles to the borders of my room to clear a space in the middle, but then I wouldn’t really look at the piles again, and then the piles grow outward, and there’s a mess again, and I push the new mess into new piles, and on and on. So I’ve been moving the stacks out more, still to the sides of things, but out where I can see them and will more likely get to them, and it has been working out fine so far. I just don’t have a workout space cleared yet, but I have the vision that I will get there.

Nail Care
I think this relates, maybe. I have had one professional manicure in my life. It was a ladies’ day with a friend and that’s what she picked out for us to do. I appreciated how presentable my hands and nails looked, and how well and long the manicure lasted. Since then, I’ve been doing some maintenance with my nails and have had the polishes last longer on the nails. Hence, simplifying one’s polish routine by not having to reapply polish so often or having to fuss with each application, saving time.

So, I just wanted to share here that if one does even this little part of taking care of one’s nails, one will find that the polishes will go on smoother and last longer on one’s nails, and look much nicer too. I used to reapply polish more often or mess up more often during the process, and I find that I do so less now. I don’t have problems with my cuticles, but I tend to have ridges in my nails, and layer-splitting (or whatever it’s called), so the part I do to keep my nails nice is to use a nail buffing block.

A block has 4 sides with each side representing a step. I take about 3 minutes to do the 4 steps on both of my hands. It lasts until the nails grow out again with ridges. I wait until the new nail growth is about half way and then I use the block again between polish days, which comes out to usually once, maybe twice a month. I probably don’t do it near as well as a professional would do it, but it helps.

So, my fellow nail polish people, I hope this tip will help with your polish days. This could also help in between professional manicure days, or if you’re looking for something to help cut back on expenses, etc.

Repurposed Candle Cup
I got a new phone at the end of last year and have been looking for a desktop cradle for it, either buying one or making one. During the cleaning up, I came across an old candle. I had the idea that it would work well as a phone cradle, and it does! I cleaned out the extra wax left over (I’ll be using it in the wax warmer) and washed out the cup. I didn’t have to customize it any further (though I could).

Currently, the cup sits in front of my lipsticks. The phone fits well in it; it sits where I can easily see if the notification light is flashing, and where I am more likely to remember to take my phone with me when I need to. I also hook the Bluetooth device on the rim (I had it wherever, previously), and I sit the controller to the clock radio in it also (it hides behind the phone usually).

It’s been working well! It clears up a little more room and I’m not knocking things over as much. The miniature elephant is pleased.

No Buy January
This one’s for my makeup bank and my wallet. I had considered doing an official No Buy/ Lo-Buy for 2015, and then scrapped it. Scrapping it seems to have been a good idea, because I realized that the month was coming to an end and that I hadn’t bought any new makeup all month. In other words, I wasn’t obsessed with the thought of restriction, so it didn’t feel like something with which to struggle; instead, I just continued being more mindful of what I need, what I want, and when would be a better situation or time to get it or not.

I have a Sephora gift card from Christmas (thanks to Big Bro!), but I haven’t decided what I want to get yet – I have a few things in mind. I wouldn’t have counted that in the NB/LB thing as I had planned it anyway.

I use a spreadsheet to keep track of expenses and another for beauty stuff. Most of my money in January went towards food and things for life, like an agenda to help me keep track of dates and such.

I did pick up a spice organizer to use for my nail polishes because I needed to fill out an order and the price had gone down. I’ll be showing that in another post, hopefully soon.

Okay, when I think I don’t have much to say, it turns out to be a longer post than expected, but there it is.

February 2015 Beauty Palette

I meant to have a photo of a typical look I did using the January products but I failed. I already have one face pic for February, so I’ll have at least one look to share next month.

One thing that has already been helpful about having a set of chosen products ready is that I get ready quicker in the morning. I can be indecisive; sorting out the choices in my mind in the mornings while I am still trying to wake up can take a long time. Without makeup, I could be ready in 10 minutes – those were the days! I still do that sometimes, but in the mornings, it would take more than that for my brain to be awake enough to take on the day anyway, so I try not to mind waking up much earlier to do my makeup.

So, having most of the products picked out beforehand has helped. Things already match, I’m not changing my mind in the middle as much, I remember every area more often, etc. It’s been good.

Let’s close out January and get into February.
Notes on the January products:

I’ve posted a more detailed review of the prize products here: [Prize Products Review]. In short, I am very pleased with the products, especially with the Urban Decay Big Fatty mascara! I’ve let go of the NYX Xtreme Lip Cream in Buttery Nude; the scent was off. At this point, I don’t think I’m that crazy about the LORAC eye primer; it’s decent, but I probably wouldn’t buy it.

I did use a few other products in addition to the January products, but did not substitute anything in place of them; I might have used an eyeliner pencil or lip liner, neither of which had been on the list in the first place.

Products for continuous feature:
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup in 60 Natural Beige
Rimmel Stay Matte Powder in Transparent
Revlon Photoready Concealer in Light Medium
NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder in Taupe/ Ash

I have let go of the Tarte Maracuja foundation; I think it’s separating too much now. It wasn’t lasting as long as it used to but I did use it as much as possible. In its place, I’ll be using the Neutrogena Healthy Skin foundation – this is my second bottle of it. The formula is wonderful and at the end of the day, one can barely notice that it faded some. The other products don’t show much progress even though I used them a lot, except for the Rimmel powder, which is slowly but surely showing more pan.

February featured Products:
Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation in Dawn (sample; not pictured)
Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain in Shanghai Sizzle
Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil in Sable
Chloé Eau De Parfum by Chloé (sample)
Viva La Juicy Eau De Parfum by Juicy Couture (sample)
Urban Decay Big Fatty mascara
Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze (as eye primer)
Urban Decay Naked Palette
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on eye pencil in Ransom
Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Exposed

At the end of last year, I visited an Estee Lauder counter in Macy’s. I got color-matched to the Double Wear Foundation and picked up a sample. It looks like a small sample, but I’ve used it several times already and there’s still more! I’ll have a picture of it next time probably. So far, I like it, but won’t be purchasing a full-size until I’ve finished up others, and then we’ll see.

On the lips, I will be focusing on Bite Beauty’s Sable and Revlon’s Shanghai Sizzle. Sable came in a holiday set of 4 and I have not used any of them yet, so I’m excited to try it. It looks like an everyday kind of pink. Shanghai Sizzle, I’d say, is a neutral medium red. I’m trying to branch out a little with red, and I’m thinking I should make a point to use the more liquid lip products as well since they don’t last as long.

I’m going to continue with wearing Chloé, since it looks like I can finish it up in another week or two (and it’s one of my favorite scents). When that is done, I’ll be using a Viva La Juicy rollerball, since I have two of these also. The Big Fatty mascara will also be continued, since I tend to use one mascara until it’s done, and this one works great!

Bad to the Bronze will be used as an eye primer; I’m still trying to use this up and I think it will be a good base for the next item. For eye shadows, I’ll be dipping into the Urban Decay Naked Palette, a collection of warm browns and companion shades. I have been using a bronze eye liner pencil, but I thought for a pop of color on adventurous days, I would try to incorporate the Urban Decay 24/7 pencil in Ransom, a violet with sort of a slight blue shift.

On the cheeks shall be the Tarte Amazonian Clay blush in Exposed. It doesn’t look like much in the pan, but it is a pretty while muted rose, great for everyday use. I think it will give a healthy color to my face and compliment the red lips well.

(Notice that I am working on being “fancy?” Labeled pictures, wow! :P And yes, I ended up having to cut out the background to one of the photos because too much shadow - I try not to have to do too much editing to photos.)

(And... just noticed that I forgot to include the Revlon Moisture Stain in the label for the 4th picture. :/ )
