SPRING Cleaning In Deed

Should say Apr/ May/ June.
Tough luck, Corner

My mom does this thing to help one remember to flip their mattress.

At one corner, she writes “Jan/ Feb/ March.”  Then she flips it over long-ways and on the corner that faces her now she writes “Apr/ May/ June.”  A rotation and that corner gets “July/ Aug/ Sept.”  A flip over short-ways and that corner reads “Oct/ Nov/ Dec.”

Whatever month it is, it should read correctly in the corner.  Pretty good for wearing a mattress down rather evenly [depending on size, mattress type, and number of persons using it, probably].

In the last few years, I’ve been following the mattress schedule pretty well.

It’s soon to be April [as I write this] and so I did some bedding laundry and flipped the mattress over.  As I lifted the mattress to one side, I noticed that the box spring fabric was slightly torn.  I wondered that maybe Mega scratched it up one of those times she’s gone under my bed.  I finished flipping the mattress over.

 Then I saw it.

Right in the middle of the mattress, a spring stuck out, the pointy end of it.  I’d say that wasn’t going to be good for my back.

Dad said I can look around for a brand new mattress.

Well, I guess it’s about time- I’ve had that same mattress for a few decades, taking care of it as best I could of course.  And it was a hand-me-down from someone else before I got it.

So if I get an entirely brand new mattress, it will be either the first or second of my lifetime, depending on if the mattresses in the bunk bed Grampa built for us was brand new at the time or not.

I stuck some putty over the spring end and stuck it back in.  I took a sheet of thick felt, folded it over a few times, placed it over the hole and then duct taped the hole.

It totally looks like I’m stashing something in the mattress!

So I flipped the mattress back over again for  the spring to stick downwards just in case.  My corner is telling me that I’m on the wrong month.  Tough luck, Corner.

Dad said I should’ve taped sturdy cardboard or something instead.  I took a shipping box and put that between the mattress and the box spring.

My bed actually feels new now, haha.  It’s like it used to be, firm.  It's how I liked it to be.

Thank you for reading and thank God the spring didn’t tear up my back before I caught it!

Update [March 30, 2012]

Ah, I haven’t been posting as much as I would like, as usual.  I get into a writing and posting mode and I think I’ll start posting regularly and all of that.  Sigh.  I apologize.

And thank you if you are still following this even though I’m irregular with it!
Entertainment Update:

I saw posts from online friends raving about “Once Upon A Time,” one of the storybook themed shows on a network [Full episodes online].   While “Criminal Minds” was on reruns a couple of weeks, I decided to check OUAT out to see it for myself.  I am enjoying it immensely!  I watched the pilot and whatever episodes were also online, so I missed a few in between.

The basic premise is that the Evil Queen has banished all the storybook characters to a town in our world, Storybrooke, Maine.  [Sidenote: Stephen King is from Maine and bases several of his stories there- makes me want to visit the state and experience the setting firsthand because I’m starting to think it’s a creatively inspiring and possibly magical place]  Most of the characters don’t seem to remember who they truly are… but a few might.  An example is that Snow White is a schoolteacher in our world where she’s called Mary Margaret Blanchard and probably doesn’t remember she’s really Snow White.  I suspect that Rumpelstiltskin remembers their world but they haven't explicitly made that clear yet in the episodes that I have watched.

In my opinion, the premise is good, the writing is well done, the casting has been wonderfully chosen, the parts well acted….  The storybook lines are interwoven with the “our world” plot.  Some of what we know from the stories is played with; to understand this, a good episode to watch is “Hat Trick,” which gives a different interpretation of the Mad Hatter from Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.  I think I might buy the DVDs when they come out, and when I can afford them.

On YouTube, I sometimes watch NigaHiga’sChannel.  From there, I became more a fan of KevJumba.  Recently, I have been liking ChesterSee as well after the song “Bromance” he did with the two previously mentioned.  They are funny and Chester is so musically talented.

Months ago I had written a post on my latest music purchases.  You haven’t seen the post because I somehow messed up the post and lost the content.  I haven’t been up to rewriting it yet though I hope to do it soon.  I like finding new-to-me music from people I know or follow and some of it I think is worth passing on to you, my readers.  Especially lately, I haven’t been into a lot of what is mainstream music so I have been enjoying the search for new stuff that I’ll like from sources other than the radio or the main YouTube searches.

I did post about the newest addition to my “Oh Holy Night” crew here; that one didn’t get messed up or lost in the posting.
Favorite Faces:

I did not do this justice.  I just wanted
to eat and paused just long enough to
photo it to thank Aunty Sue.
Tra got married earlier this year.  Recently Apple visited for another friend’s wedding.  I hope to share with you their visits at some point soon because they are among my favorite peoples in the universe.  Rachel and I did some painting fun too [which reminds me- Rachel would like a cool nickname too- working on it].

Recently, Mom and Dad both had medical checkups.  They are fine.  They went in the same week and so they were both kind of on rest a few days.  Anyways, I think it was because of this that Aunty Sue blessed our family one night during that week with some home cooked meals!  She just called up one night and then stopped by with delicious lasagna that I scarfed down, and I think there was also a corned beef cabbage that Mom ate on another day.  I’m not sure what other goodies Aunty Sue brought over but there might have been more.  If not for her blessing, I would have probably have had PB and graham crackers for dinner, which I will do sometimes just because I enjoy PB&GC.  CHUNKY PB.  Well, it was much appreciated Aunty Sue!

My baby kitty, Megamouth, has been hanging out in the bathroom.  I’ve found her sleeping in the tub, sleeping in the sink, sitting on the toilet …with the lid closed!  Haha, she’s NOT potty trained yet, too bad and I think she’s too small.  She’d fall in every time probably.

Who wouldn't have this
as their favorite face?!
Speaking of favorite faces, mine just might be one of your favorites.  I think that’s a bit crazy yet possible.  So, I have started to write a skincare update post because I’m trying a few new things.  I am taking two courses at the U- I am old.  I know.  My leg has been cranky since it has been cold and crazy weather here lately but I am still walking fine.  Need to get to the gym [insert encouragement for me here].

If you’d like to see more of my face, what a crazy idea, check out this previous post and join us for Holla’s EyeMakeup Challenge.  Check it out and share it with a friend, a few friends, ... bombard us with more people and more entries!  Go for it!

Yahaira and I have gone through one round of the current themes and are trying to think up more to keep the activity going!  It has been fun and is the reason that I’ve been motivated to update my skincare regimen.

That is it for now.  Pretty much I just wanted to say “Hello” since I didn’t post a new one in over a week.

And this is my uneasiness with me and journaling- because I’ve always been one for… highly respecting people who do what they say they will, people whose words one can trust most of the time because they follow through.  In recent years, I've been let down a lot by others regarding this aspect.

Myself, I keep that in mind to practice and I’m trying to be more consistent in my beliefs translating into my actions, and I know no one is perfect in this regard and I won’t be perfect either.  I am not going to be discouraged from improving myself though.

I say I will post more consistently or that I will write this or that particular post and yet, it doesn’t happen.  I’m sure some of you are understanding about it yet still, I want to be a woman of my word.  …which means, in terms of this journal, I will probably be declaring less so that I won’t carry the guilt of “oh no, I said I would write this and I didn’t!” or “I said I would post at least once a week but it’s been over 2 months!”  I’m very sensitive to guilt; I guilt myself a lot on things and need to constantly remind myself to be easier on me, to just do better from this moment on.

All that to say...

Thank you for reading!*
Bathroom Sink Mega, and no,
she doesn't like to be washed.

*Unedited version of the ending said something like "Thank you for reading and see you next time!"  Let's hope there is a next time...  *wink*

Holla’s Eye Makeup Challenge: Join us!

Previous related post:

Holla’s Eye Makeup Challenge [a Facebook open group]

The description and a few FAQ:
Holla’s Eye Makeup Challenge
Hey Ladies, this challenge is to have some fun (No professional skills needed)
I want to join in the fun, what do I have to do? Simple, you just upload a picture of your makeup according to the day you are in the challenge (you don’t need to show your whole face if you don’t want to). The only rule, to have fun
But, I don’t know how to do a pretty makeup :( No worries we won’t judge you and the best part is, by doing this challenge you practice and polish your skills, brighten your mood and eliminate stress.

Theme Challenges by day (artistic license approved, do what you think the challenge is)
You must write a small description of what your idea of the theme is : )
(follow the -> LINK to upload your photo to the respective album)
Day 1: FIRE Eyes->
Day 2: Everything turns to ICE->
Day 3: FAIRY Land->
Day 4: What a cute Lil’ DOLL ->
Day 5: My favorite FLOWER->
Day 6: CANDY Mania ->
Day 7: Something BLUE ->
Day 8: FANTASY Island ->
Day 9: At night I turn to the DARK side ->
Day 10: My favorite CARTOON ->
Day 11: Turned to METAL ->
Day 12: MASQUERADE ball ->

Here’s what to do:

1. Ask to join the group.

Anyone can join.  Usually either Yahaira or I [or both] will be online every day and can respond in a timely manner.  We’d like to keep it a positive and safe environment.

2. Start with Day 1 and create a look for that day, “FIRE Eyes.”

As related in the description, this is mainly about the eyes.  We have some friends whom are shy and cautious about showing their whole faces- we understand and it’s okay!

If you would prefer, and you have a willing partner, you may also use someone as your model.  We have one person already doing so.

3. Upload a photo of your look into the Day 1 album.

4. Continue on to Day 2, repeating steps 2 and 3 for each day’s theme.

Please try to go through the days in order; in this way a day won’t be skipped.  If you get inspired by a theme days ahead of where you are, do the look, take the photos, but don’t upload the photo until you reach that day.  For instance, if you come up with a Day 8 look but your next look is supposed to be Day 3, wait until you’ve reached Day 8 to upload your saved look photo.

Even though they are ordered as Day 1, Day 2, etc., you do not have to do them on consecutive days.  For instance, if you begin on a Wednesday for Day 1, you do not necessarily have to do Day 2 on the following Thursday, Day 3 on Friday, and so on.  We realize that real life takes priority and so you can execute the challenge days at your own pace.

That is pretty much it I think.  Other than that, you may send in theme suggestions.  Currently there are 12 themes and we would like to expand that to keep the group going along.  Makeup tips are welcome.

Take a look around and enjoy each other’s looks!

If there are any questions or comments, you may leave them in the comment box below, message me on Facebook, or post it to the group [others may have the same question].  Suggestions on how to organize the group are also welcome; we’ve already had some helpful advice that has been implemented.

Thank you and I hope to see you in the challenge!

Can you guess what the theme was?

The Naming Of My Potential Business

I suppose a business ought to have a name.

I am serious about names.  Very serious.  I still regret that my fish when I was younger had very obvious names.  The goldfish was Goldie.  The silver goldfish was Silvie.  My first betta was blue and I called him “Blue.”  They deserved better.

I can hear you snoring.

Since then, I’ve gotten more creative and a little neurotic about naming my pets and things.  I get a lot of compliments regarding my cat’s name, Megamouth.  “Mega” for short.  You can read the meaning behind naming her here.

So naming a potential business… *sigh.  I’ll be putting my business out there for people to be able to criticize what I do.  I don't know why criticism should be scary for me; I endured a few years of architecture studio crits at "First College."  Crits made people cry and sweat and quit.  Not me.

Do I put my own name in it somewhere?  Do I try to name it from something that inspires the designs?

I put the question to my Facebook friends:

I liked the idea of using “grace” or “gracious,” yet how…?  I have a difficulty in being too specific with what I do because I have a wide range of interests, so “jewelry” might be too specific.  I had made drawstring bags a few years ago that my friends enjoyed, so it would sound strange to me to sell bags from a business with the word “jewelry” in the name.  “Gems” would be better.  I enjoy punny names but what I would be doing doesn't seem to fit with having such a name.

After asking the question and getting the feedback, I then wondered if I would be offending some people if I don’t use their suggestions.  I’ve said before: I think too much.

I was afraid to put my own idea out there, which is to name it after my grandmother who bought me my first expensive beads [which I explained in the previous business post, linked at the beginning].

Would I be doing something for which Grandma would be proud?  What if I fail?

After all that, I have decided.  Indecision drives me crazy when others do it and even more so when I do it myself.  So, … now I don’t know if I should put the name out there- what if someone reads this and then takes the name before my business is ready for becoming official?

Right, as if a lot of people read this journal.  As if a lot of spiteful people would read this.

Anyways, I have decided, I think, to call it…

Haruyo Moon

…after both of my grandmothers.  My other grandmother died when I was barely 2 years old and yet I sense that I was a lot like her, like I have inherited some of her spirit- I don't know that for sure.

Now that the name has been decided, barring any circumstances preventing it, I am onto designing a logo for it.  I will write about that another time.

Any thoughts on this so far?

Thank you for reading and leaving a comment below is welcomed!

Introduction to Holla’s Eye Makeup Challenge

Every so often, I like to do something with my makeup whether I’m going out or not [many times not].  It’s only been about the last 8 years or so that I have been wearing makeup, and still not every day or regularly at that. Making up my face has become another creative outlet for me when I need to do something creative.  It’s odd sometimes because I’ll even go hang out with a friend, and having done my eyes a little dramatically but not my lips and wearing jeans, slippers and a T-shirt.

Sometimes I would take a photo of my eye makeup and sometimes post it on FB.  The photo can remind me of a certain look that I liked and how I did it so that I can do it again.

And sometimes someone will comment or like the photo.

Almost a year ago, I made a friend online.  She also posts her creative arts, which also includes makeup looks.  I think she’s more creative than I am.  Plus, she’s gorgeous!

I started a photo album titled “Dedicated to Yahaira” with the description: “For my beautiful friend Yahaira who bullied me into this, teasing my Asian eyes...     Haha- really because she is gorgeous and is inspirational for so many things which include fun makeup shots :)”  She had made many notes mainly about the lack of eyelash presence in my photos- she makes me laugh quite often!

I do have very short and sparse eyelashes.  :/  Anyways, so then Yahaira said she wanted “fire eyes!”  So I did a “fire” look with my eye makeup.  Then she’d make other idea suggestions… and I HAD to do them because it was fun!

So all of that turned into Yahaira’s fantastic idea of an eye makeup challenge.  She asked me to help her with putting it together but really it is all her amazingly creative ideas- really I haven't done much other than to participate and give suggestions... the product of which is…

And I will write and post a description of it… soon.

My avatar- isn't she pretty?
They make fun that she's not
wearing any pants. I say
they're my swim bottoms
but no one buys that.
“Holla” is one of the avatars that Yahaira uses in the online game we both play.  Many times, friends from that game call each other by the avatar name and it’s just fun to do!  Another inside joke in the game we play has to do with how we are able to dress up our avatars…  which is why I started playing that game- in order to drool over clothes that I will never have in real life...  Anyways, Holla loves to laugh and she will dress… interestingly.  For instance, she might put the “Lion King” makeup on Holla, the look which is modeled after Rafiki; then I would leave her a comment like, “You’ve got something on your face.”  Okay, I don’t know if I explained that well- I smile whenever I think of it.

Thank you for reading and keep an eye out for the challenge- better yet, join us!

Brush Holder Tutorial

*I wrote this as a MAKEUP brush holder, but this project could be used for other things as well.  I mention using a second one as a pen holder; another idea could be to make one for paintbrushes, etc.  So even if you’re not into makeup or don’t need a makeup brush holder, please check out the tutorial anyway and perhaps you’ll come up with an idea that you could use.

If you have been into a Sephora store, you might have noticed the section of brushes and how they are displayed.  The brushes are standing up in clear boxes filled with small beads; the beads are what allows the brushes to stand upright rather than to lay crowded on each other.  It looks quite nice and many people have done their own versions.

To buy a nice ready-made brush holder, check out Glitzy Glam.  They come personalized with your initial among a colorful design and a bag of beads.

I made my own brush holder because I just needed the beads and I love do-it-yourself projects.  I'm writing about my holder because I had posted a photo of it on my Facebook and a friend said she might do the same; I thought I would record my experience in a post, including a few pointers.  Here is how I put mine together  >

The materials you could find in most craft stores.  You will need some kind of container, so a glass or plastic jar, perhaps a plastic or clay cup, whatever will suit you; a bag of beads to fill the container; and additional decorations if you would like.

For my holder, I am repurposing a glass cup from a candle I had burned.  It’s heavy enough to stay put and it looks pretty after I had cleaned it up from the wax and soot.  I just have to be mindful to keep it away from my cats.

by Ben Franklin Crafts.
For the beads, I went to Ben FranklinCrafts.  They had a sale going on beads which are more commonly used in floral arrangements.  The one I picked out are ¼” half rounds in yellow.  It was the only size they had on the shelf that was in yellow.

The ¼” works fine but a size smaller might be a bit better in terms of the ease in moving brushes around.  Or maybe full round beads would do better also.  The half rounds were just what I found at the time that I went to the store.

Another good alternative might be seed beads in about a size 4.  I have a supply of seed beads but am not exactly sure where I have them stashed at the moment or I would have tested it out before suggesting them.  I am sure they would do fine as well.  I saw on YouTube that someone had used coffee beans, so it’s okay to be creative with the filler choice.  Also, if you are using an opaque container, like a clay cup, then the color of the filler doesn’t matter as much as when using a transparent glass container like the one I used.

Then all I did was to fill the glass cup with the half round beads.  I filled the cup to a little past halfway.

Do not fill the container all the way or too close to the top.  When sticking the brushes into the filler, the filler is going to displace some and will spill out of the container if filled too much.

Here is the finished result, including my makeup brushes.

I don’t have a lot of brushes so I also stick my makeup pencils in it.  I propped my favorite tweezers on the edge.  I think it’s quite a neat way to store or display the brushes and pencils, and not having to dig around for the particular one I want to use.

I had extra glass cups and enough beads to fill another cup, so I did so.  I am sticking in pens and markers and a few other random things into the second holder.  I might buy another bag of beads and make another one for my paintbrushes….

If you’re using a plain container, you could further personalize it by using ribbon, stickers, or paint.  I have some pretty ribbons I use for card-making or other crafts; I haven’t decided yet if one of the ribbons I already have will go with the yellow or if I’ll look around for other ideas.

Anyways, that is my tutorial for a DIY makeup brush holder.  All totaled, not counting the cost of the glass cup or the candle that came in it, I spent less than $10 for the project, which was the cost of the beads.  I hope you found this post helpful.

Thank you for reading.

The Potential Business

When I was still very young, maybe around 10 years old, Grandma came for a visit.  One afternoon, she took Mom and I to Bead It! and let me pick out what I wanted.  I don’t remember all of what I had picked out that day but it included a strand of blue acrylic leaf beads and one of blue flower beads.

They sat in my rooms for years after I realized how much money Grandma had spent on me.  I know she did it gladly and generously yet that is a part of why those beads are just so special to me.

My collection of beads has grown over the years.  Slowly I have been working on the craft of beaded jewelry, earrings mostly and a few necklaces here and there.  I have mostly given things I’ve made to friends as gifts.  I’ve traded a piece with a co-worker… in return for a few dollars….  At one time, Mom had volunteered her hands to help me make a real business of my jewelry, yet I haven’t been so confident in thinking that people would want to buy my pieces.

… until recently, the confidence has been growing, with the encouragement of friends, online friends I have met in the last few years, and other friends I’ve reconnected with over Facebook.

I’m still a bit hesitant though stepping closer to really doing this, selling jewelry that I make.  So I suppose I ought to write about this as things go.

The photos are glimpses of pieces I've made.

The top one is a pair of earrings- a 2 inch gold chain with 3 acrylic green leaves linked on the end.  I wear this pair myself.  The leaves make a soft chime-like sound when I move my head.

The middle one is another pair of earrings that I wear myself.  This is one of my favorite blue pieces.  In it I used 2 colors of Swarovski crystal bicone beads in 2 sizes, silver daisy findings, and swirly blue... I'm not exactly sure how to describe the shape of them.  They're sort of swirly opaque faceted nugget beads...?

The third pic is showing the bottom third of a pair of earrings, probably the most recent and fanciest design I have made yet.  I was inspired by cherry blossoms and used small pink acrylic flowers, medium white acrylic flowers, iridescent clear sequins, white Swarovski crystal bicones, sterling silver flower bead caps, and salmon twisted, fluted beads.

I suppose another reason I've been a bit hesitant is that if I am to sell something, I want it to be of good quality and I want to know the most that I can about a craft, along with continual learning of the craft as well.  I want to be able to do this with the best of my ability.

With that in mind, I need to brush up on the bead shapes, types, sizes, and the different findings.  Prices too.  I should start thinking about investing in a few good tools as things progress.  Oh my, so much to think about!

And I want this to be something of which Grandma would have been proud.

So, what do you think so far?  Potential?  Any ideas or advice?  I would especially need business advice as I do not know so much about running a business.

Thank you for reading and please leave comments below!
